Spring Break began in the 1960’s featured in the movie “Where the boys are” and really kicked off in Fort Lauderdale, Florida as well as for West Coast students in Mazatlan, Mexico. US Colleges back then gave students a long weekend sometime in February, March or April for some time off from studies. Talk about the history of spring break!
That morphed into a full week off that is now what we consider college spring break. The first weeks of spring break are actually students from Canada, called Reading Week and not spring break for those north of the border.
US students at some random colleges do break the last week in February, with the first big burst of students from some Michigan and various east coast colleges that very first week in March.
The majority of Midwest students break the middle two weeks of March. Many high schools, as well as select states like Missouri and California, typically break the very last week of March. Come April, Catholic colleges break around Easter (which can in fact be in March but usually is in April) as well as some Missouri, Chicago, New York, and Michigan high school spring break weeks falling in April.
The biggest spring break dates year over year are basically March 5th to March 25th, roughly speaking. If you break on dates that fall before the 5th, or after the 25th, Inertia Tours recommends really only considering Cancun, as this is the destination with the most airlift (flights) and therefore has the most potential to still have students partying in any real numbers.
South Padre Spring Break peaks out the Wednesday before what is called Texas Week, as well as continuing on through the Wednesday after Texas week. If you’re wondering when college spring break 2024 is on the Island, Anytime March 3rd to 26th is very good. Texas week is split March 3rd to March 19th, which represents the largest two weeks.
Spring Break overall lasts from start to finish about 6 weeks, with 3 weeks being the main travel times in March.
